Summary/Recap

1. In which ways does technology affect s.c/gossip in primary?
Mainly, technology helps spread the information faster than in any other way. Usually through Facebook,Blackberry, Cell-phone and any other social communication media.

2.Which are the main elements of gossip/s.c?
Gossip is based in many aspects, due to it being a big problems which implicates a victim, audience and offender. Gossip is usually seen in:
  • Public figures
  • Family
  • Friends
  • school
And it is created by jealousy, anger, problem solving/creating or just for fun. The cycle is basically:
Offender: Invents a situation/aspect and communicates it > Listener/spreader: Listens to the juicy comment and spreads it to other people. > Victim: Sometimes the victim get's the gossip back, but sometimes he/she is just affected by it.

3.What is gossip?
Gossip is the creation and repetition of rumors, usually about a person/individual, it freequently has no positive point/planned effect, and is most of the times ment to create a negative image of an individual.

It has the power to tear down, debilitate and destroy, it spreads quickly and has the ability to affect everything it touches. Believe it or not, gossip does that. It is caused because people spread the information as a fact even if we don’t know it is true. Therefore, we can hurt people’s feelings, reputations and life’s in general. This lowers their self-esteem, and they start to believe things about themselves, which aren’t true.

4.What does gossip do?
  • Gossip makes innocent people suffer, not only by being labeled, but also bullied.
  • It is also biased and very prejudicial. Because wrong conclusions usually come up when someone hears only one side of a story. A gossip will tell you only what he wants you to hear.
  • It destroys friendship. Irreparable harm is done to long-lasting relationships.

WHEN TO TALK AND WHEN TO STAY QUIET

Sofia Ayalde 22/05/12

5 Situations when you should talk:
  • When what I say adds anything to the meeting in which ideas are exchanged.
  • If what I say is important for the person whom I'll tell it to.
  • If they have authorized me to express my opinion on an issue.
  • If you are in the right place and at the right time to tell it.
  • When you disagree with what someone is saying and you need to defend your opinion.

5 Situations when you should not talk:
  • When somebody talks bad about other try to get out of there or dont talk about it.
  • When somebody tell you "but dont tell it to anyone" take it seriosly.
  • When the facts are better than the gossip.
  • When you dont know about the theme, you dont know waht people are talking about is better to stay quiet.
  • When somebody tell you a secret or something personal dont go a blow it to everybody.

USEFULNESS

The usefulness of this article is to see when we should express our opinion and when is better to do our best and keep the information for us. I got this article from the newspaper El Pais, so we can see that not only in the internet we can get information, and that we are not the only people that are trying to stop gossip, but also a national news paper is taking action for this problem.

Interview to Ricardo Pineda

Usefulness
From this we can only say that it is all based on verifying and not guessing. And that in the process of our community raising the level of conscience, gossip will disappear, being replaced by verified, sufficient, efficient and useful information.

What does gossip do?

The majority of hurtful rumors are false. Anything that is repeated several times is often remembered differently and changed and is not the same to what was first said. Our memories are not infallible so we say things which are not true.

  • Gossip makes innocent people suffer. Innocent people are not only labeled but also bullied.
  • It is also one-sided, biased and very prejudicial. Because wrong conclusions usually come up when someone hears only one side of a story. A gossip will tell you only what he wants you to hear.
  • It destroys friendship. Irreparable harm is done to long-lasting relationships.

Usefulness
This helps us see which the consequences are, therefore giving us proof to show the kids (second and fifth grade) we are doing our workshops (action) with : how gossip can affect people. We are guessing they'll have some sort of impact and will want to stop it. We can't force people to stop something they don't want to stop, so we need to give them a reason to want and have the will to stop it, because the power is not in one individual, it is on a community.

When is it gossip?

  • When we tell and/or listen to something which doesn't apport anything positive, about someone for entertainment. Even if we don't tell because we want to help, but actually, we want to be entertained at the expenses of another person. We want to laugh at someone's weaknesses.
  • When we tell and/or listen to increase our own ego. Some people think that to make themselves feel big, they need to make others look small. The more people gossip about another's mistakes, the more they grow their own egos.
  • When we tell and/or listen in order to get revenge. The one who gossips would "get something on" the other person and spread it to get revenge.

Usefulness
It basically helped us undertand when gossip is really gossip. Because people may think that spreading something that is actually useful, true, helpful, kind and/or necessary is gossip, but it actually isn't. And we were just starting to know our topic, and even if we thought we knew everything, we didin't.

GOSSIP IN GENERAL
  • WHY? As a summary, we can say that people gossip to get attention, to be funny or have something to talk about.. or in other cases to make other people feel bad.

  • HOW TO STOP IT? Don´t follow the chain, because you don´t even no if it´s true, so why tell it? We know it is hard because other people may tell you : Why didn't you tell me?!!!

  • HOW TO DEAL WITH IT? Try to ignore it, and if it doesn't work out, try to track down the one who started it and try to figure out what happend, or just deny it, say it´s not true.

  • Gossip is not good, it can encourage people to kill themselves due to the pressure, people who have huge conflicts with gossip, may even considere suicide.. so gossip isn't only about making people feel bad, it is bout ruining their lifes, in severe cases.

Usefulness
This was our first idea to our action (sort of). Because we realized there is nothing we can do to make people stop it. But we could at least try to make them want to stop, make them have the will, and you will only want to stop something, once you know how bad it is, how it affects the environment and indirectly it affects every single individual. So this opened many doors to us, and made us think about what action we could do.

What is gossip?

Gossip generally involves the creation and repetition of rumors, frequently about a person/individual which is not present to give his/her perspective of the situation/topic . Most of the times, gossip has no positive point/planned outcome, and is most of the times intended to create a negative image of an individual. This process (gossip) can be seen in many places/cases, such as:
  • Public figures
  • Family
  • Friends
  • Acquaintances

It is normal for people who spread rumors to not consider themselves to be gossipers. It all starts with somebody saying something as a fact, even if they are not sure it is. Thus, he or she is not responsible for the repetition of the information. It is possible to create and spread rumors about positive events or attributes of another person. But even if the rumor may be considered good news to those that hear it, the information may not be a fact and could lead to negative consequences.

While many rumors are considered relatively innocent, gossip has enough power to ruin lives and reputations. For this reason, it is a good idea to double check all types of information about other people before passing it on to another individual.

Usefulness
This just gave us a clear idea of what gossip was.Because at this point, we had nothing more than our prior knowledge.
